On Good Friday I was in Tulsa and I was observing my Uncle do some serious work on my horse (the civic). And a Pastor of a Local Congregation was walking door to door inviting people to their Churches Easter programming. He handed me a door knocker and moved on. I was really disappointed, he did not want to talk to us nor get our names or anything.
This really bugged me. I wanted to be authentically asked to come to his church. As a Pastor I wanted to hear his sells pitch so to speak. I coach a soccer U8 soccer team and I have a Pentecostal preachers kid on my team and she has authentically invited me to church on a few occasions. She even knows I am a Pastor and still ask me.
I guess what I am getting at is if you are going to canvas the areas around your church, hand out flyers or any other way of inviting people to your congregation at least be authentic about it. Let those you are attempting to reach out to know why coming to your church is important to you. Cold handouts will not do it.
I have been asked by a few what is Advent Shenanigans. Here is my best definition.
Advent Shenanigans = doing things to bring the light of Christ into the world in ways that you would not normally do.
i.e working with the local schools to make sure kids have jackets to stay warm, each jacket will be blessed on the Sunday before and send out that Monday to schools we have worked with.
i.e. doing a christmas eve service in a homeless shelter
i.e. helping out another UMC church who is in need of coats for their coat pantry.
Last year I helped lead some advent shenanigans. At McFarlin UMC we put together some backpacks full of gear for those who are without and then we had a Christmas Eve service at a local shelter. This year my advent shenanigans again has two parts.
1. I have a list of about 62 children in the Locust Grove Elementary School who need a new coat.
2. The McFarlin UMC Coat Pantry needs used clean coats, and since they did such a great job painting @fumclgok church that we can help them out by bringing your coat up to @fumclgok and I will make sure that we get them down to McFarlin to help them meet their needs.
I am hoping to meet goal number one by December 14th. Goal Number two has until December 25th when we go down to OKC for Family Christmas.
If you want to help in this shenanigan please contact me and we can do a great thing for the kingdom.
